Emulsion and RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible emulsion powder) can form high tensile strength and bond strength on different materials after film formation, and they are combined with inorganic binder cement as the second binder in mortar, cement and polymer play corresponding special features respectively, so that the performance of mortar can be improved. By observing the microstructure of polymer-cement composite material, it is concluded that the addition of redispersible emulsion powder can make the polymer film and become a part of the pore wall, and the mortar forms a whole through the internal force, which improves the cohesion strength of the mortar, and thus increases the failure stress and ultimate strain of the mortar. The long-term properties of redispersible emulsion powder in mortar were studied. It was observed by SEM that after 10 years, the microstructure of polymer in mortar still did not change, and it maintained stable bond, flexural and compressive strength and good hydrophobic properties. Wang Ziming et al. [11] studied the formation mechanism of the redispersible emulsion powder on the strength of the ceramic tile binder, and found that after the polymer dried into film, on the one hand, the polymer film formed a flexible connection between the mortar and the ceramic tile; on the other hand, in the newly mixed mortar, the polymer increased the gas content of the mortar and affected the formation and wettability of the surface. The polymer will also have a better effect on the hydration process and shrinkage of the cement in the binder, all of which will have a better help in improving the bond strength.
The addition of RDP/Redispersible Polymer Powder(redispersible latex powder) to mortar can significantly improve the bond strength with other materials, because the hydrophilic latex powder and the liquid phase of the cement suspension permeate into the pores and capillaries of the matrix, and the latex powder forms a film in the pores and capillaries and is firmly adsorbed on the surface of the matrix, thus ensuring a good bond strength between the cementing material and the matrix.
The optimization of latex powder on mortar performance is due to the fact that latex powder is a high polymer with polar groups. When latex powder is mixed with EPS particles, the non-polar chain segment of latex powder polymerization main chain will physically adsorb the non-polar surface of EPS. The polar groups in the polymer are oriented outward on the surface of EPS particles, making EPS particles change from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. Due to the modification effect of latex powder on the surface of EPS particles, the problem that EPS particles are easy to float when exposed to water and the stratification degree of mortar is large is solved. At this time, cement is added to mix, and the polar groups adsorbed on the surface of EPS particles interact with the cement particles and are closely combined, so that the workability of EPS insulation mortar is significantly improved. This is reflected in the EPS particles are easily wetted by cement slurry, and the binding force between the two is greatly improved.Rdp/Redispersible emulsion powder can be physically mixed with other mechanical adhesives (such as cement, hydrated lime, gypsum, etc.) as well as various aggregates, fillers and other additives (such as cellulose, starch ether, lignocellulose, hydrophobic agents, etc.) to make dry mixed mortar. When the dry mortar is mixed in water, the latex powder particles are dispersed into the water under the action of hydrophilic protective colloid and mechanical shear. For example, in the dry shotcrete repair mortar, the dry mortar with the redispersible emulsion powder and water are mixed at the end of the nozzle for about 0.1s and then sprayed onto the construction surface, which is sufficient for the redispersible emulsion powder to fully disperse and form a film. In the early mixing stage, the emulsion powder has begun to affect the rheology and constructability of the mortar. Due to the different characteristics of the emulsion powder itself and the modification, this effect is also different, some help the flow effect, and some increase the thixotropy effect. The mechanism of its influence comes from many aspects, including the influence of the affinity of the emulsion powder to water when dispersed, the influence of the different education of the emulsion powder after dispersion, the influence of the protective colloid, the influence of the cement and water, the influence of the gas content of the mortar and the influence of the bubble distribution, and the influence of its own additives and the interaction with other additives. Among them, the more common view is that the redispersible emulsion powder usually increases the gas content of the mortar, thus playing a lubricating role in the construction of the mortar, and the emulsion powder, especially when the protective colloid is dispersed, the increase in the affinity for water and the teaching consistency helps to improve the cohesion of the construction mortar, thereby improving the workability of the mortar. Subsequently, wet mortar containing emulsion powder dispersion is constructed on the working surface. With the reduction of water at three levels, the absorption of the base, the consumption of cement hydration reaction, and the evaporation of surface water into the air, the resin particles gradually approach and the interface gradually fuse with each other, and finally become a continuous polymer film. This process mainly occurs in the pores of the mortar and the surface of the solid.
With the increase of the content of redispersible emulsion powder/Rdp, the whole system develops in the direction of plastic. In the case of high emulsion powder content, the polymer phase in the cured mortar gradually exceeds the phase of the inorganic hydration product, the mortar has a qualitative change, and becomes an elastomer, while the hydration product of the cement becomes a "filler". The dispersed film of dispersible emulsion powder distributed on the interface plays another key role, that is, it enhances the adhesion of the contact material, which is good for some difficult surfaces, such as very low water absorption or non-water absorption surfaces (such as smooth concrete and cement material surface, steel plate, homogeneous brick, vitrified brick surface, etc.) and organic material surfaces (such as EPS board, plastic, etc.). It is especially important. Because the bonding of the mechanical adhesive to the material is achieved through the principle of mechanical embeddings, that is, the hydraulic slurry penetrates into the gap of other materials, gradually solidifies, and finally the mortar is attached to the surface of the material like the key embedded in the lock. For the above difficult surface, due to the inability to effectively penetrate into the material to form a good mechanical embeddings, The mortar with only inorganic adhesive is not effectively bonded to it, which is well proved by electron microscope observation. The bonding mechanism of polymers is different.
